When thinking of Andy Warhol what is the first thing that comes to mind? For many, they think of his revolutionary artwork, for others they think of his eccentric lifestyle and personality. What I’m getting at is that Andy Warhol had a lasting effect on anyone who has viewed his artwork in one way or another. Something interesting about Warhol was that he was openly gay, before the gay liberation movement really had taken place and it didn’t matter that he was! I think that the reason it was that way was because he was so talented and created so many famous works of art and him being a homosexual man really influenced the work that he had created. Something that I found interesting was how Andy’s commercial artwork more or less defined and shaped the entire graphic design and pop art genres forever and had a lasting impression on both genres. Another thing I feel is kind of different about Warhol compared to other artists we’ve discussed is that he actually created his own level of art. In the sense that his work is not really considered ‘fine’ or high art, yet it definitely is not low art either. The saying “you are who you surround yourself with” is really fitting in the sense of Andy Warhol, because he surrounded himself and did paintings of famous individuals and in turn became incredibly successful and famous himself, largely because of the people he was doing paintings of and the parties/clubs he was attending with. Overall he was a very unique artist who had a very long and lasting impression on the art world and will continue to do so for years to come.
